Fashola inaugurates 7km road in Ikorodu

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola on Tuesday inaugurated the seven-kilometre Ibeshe Road in Ikorodu Local Government Area, with a warning to the residents not to trade by the roadside.

The governor said the completion of the road was in fulfillment of his electoral promise to residents of the area. He added that before its reconstruction, the road was in a bad state.

He said, “This Ibeshe Road was an electoral issue during my campaign. The road was broken; there was virtually no commercial activity here. In fact, the seven-kilometre road took us 45 minutes to travel that time. Today, we made the same journey in less than 10 minutes.

“I can see that a textile factory is now here, new petrol stations are springing up, schools are expanding, our children can now walk on decent and motorable roads to school and I have seen all other businesses springing up. For us, this project is more than a road; it is a statement of fidelity.”

Fashola also told the community that contractors would soon commence work on a ferry terminal and jetty as well as a housing estate expected to deliver 720 flats.

“Hold me to those promises, because we intend to deliver. Our work in Ikorodu is not finished; it is a strategic town. It is a strategic economic centre and you will see that we have made a lot of progress on Mile 12-Ikorodu Road, a 13.3 kilometre road that we are rebuilding from four lanes to six lanes with the BRT corridor,” Fashola said.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said the road was a proof of the government’s commitment to open up rural communities to prevent rural-urban drift.

He said the road was awarded on April 29, 2010 and was built with interlocking paving stone, measuring seven kilometres with 15 metres width.

Hamzat said, “Please, take ownership of this road and ensure that nobody comes here to cut the road for any reason because we have built service ducts in line with international standards.”
